How to measure distance on a map

  1. Choose Distance above the map (or press D).
  2. Click where the route starts, then click at every turn. The current segment and the running total follow your cursor.
  3. Double-click, press Enter or tap Finish to end the route.
  4. Drag any point to adjust it, or drag a small midpoint handle to add a bend. Right-click a point to remove it.

The panel shows the total length in your chosen unit, the same length in every other unit, how long it takes to walk, run, cycle or drive, and a table of every segment with its length and compass direction.

How to measure area on a map

  1. Choose Area (A) and switch to the Satellite basemap if you are measuring a field, roof, lot or parking area.
  2. Click each corner of the shape in order. Click the first point again, or press Enter, to close it.
  3. Read the area in square meters, hectares, acres, square feet, square miles or mu, together with the perimeter and the length of every side.

To compare a size with something familiar, the panel also expresses the area as soccer pitches, basketball courts, house lots or Central Park.

Radius and coordinates

Radius (R) draws a circle from a center and an edge point and reports the radius, diameter, circumference and area — useful for a delivery zone, a walking distance around a home, or the reach of a sprinkler or signal. Point (P) gives the exact latitude and longitude of any spot in decimal degrees and in degrees, minutes and seconds, ready to copy into GPS apps, forms or spreadsheets.

Everyday uses
  • Running, walking and cycling: plan a route of a set length and see how long it takes.
  • Home and garden: the size of a lawn, a roof, a fence line or a plot before buying materials.
  • Property and land: a quick check of a lot's area in acres, hectares or square feet.
  • Moving and commuting: straight-line distance from a new home to work or school.
  • Travel: the true flight distance between cities, drawn along the great-circle route.
  • Business: delivery radius, service area or the size of an event site.

Units

Choose Metric, Imperial or Nautical and the tool picks a readable unit automatically — meters becoming kilometers, feet becoming miles, square feet becoming acres. You can also fix a unit for distance and for area, or click any row under a result to switch just that measurement.

How accurate is it?

Every length is measured on the Earth's surface along the shortest path between points (great-circle distance), and every area is computed on the globe — not on the flat map, which stretches sizes away from the equator. Long lines are drawn as curves for the same reason: that curve is the true shortest route. On a city scale the results match survey-grade measurements to well under one percent; the main source of error is where you click, so zoom in close before placing points on an exact corner.

This is a planning and estimation tool. For legal boundaries, rely on an official survey.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure distance on a map?

Choose Distance, click the start point and every turn of the route, then double-click or press Enter to finish. The total length, each segment and travel times appear in the panel.

How do I measure the area of land or a roof?

Choose Area, switch to the Satellite basemap, and click each corner of the shape. Click the first point again to close it. The area is shown in square meters, hectares, acres, square feet and more.

How many square feet are in an acre?

One acre is 43,560 square feet, or about 4,046.86 square meters. One hectare is 10,000 square meters, or about 2.471 acres.

Is the map measurement accurate?

Lengths are great-circle distances and areas are computed on the globe, so they are not distorted by the flat map. Results are accurate to well under one percent at city scale; placing points precisely matters most.

Can I measure in miles and feet?

Yes. Choose Imperial units for feet, miles, acres and square miles, or pick any specific unit for distance and area. You can also click a unit row under a result to switch just that measurement.

Can I save or share my measurements?

Your measurements are kept in this browser. Copy link creates a link that stores every measurement and the map view, so anyone who opens it sees the same result.
