Make a fantasy map from Voronoi cells
This generator builds a world on a Voronoi grid: a few thousand cells, relaxed so they are roughly even. Every cell gets an elevation from layered noise and a falloff toward the edges, and the cells above sea level become land. Moisture noise and height then decide the biome — beaches, grassland, dry plains, forest, mountains and snow. Finally, kingdoms grow across the land from evenly spread capitals.
- Choose a world shape: one island, a large continent or an archipelago.
- Set how much of the map is land, and how many cells to use — more cells, finer coastlines.
- Press New world until you like the shape, then add kingdoms.
- Switch between the colored Atlas style and the old-map Parchment style.
Why Voronoi cells work so well for maps
A square grid makes blocky coastlines and has two kinds of neighbors (side and corner). Voronoi cells have irregular, natural-looking edges, and every cell shares a real border with each neighbor, so growing regions, tracing coastlines and finding paths all work on one clean graph. Relaxing the points first (see Lloyd relaxation) keeps cells similar in size, so no part of the map is more detailed than another.
Hover over the map to see the elevation and biome of any cell. For real-world geography, use the Voronoi map generator instead.
Frequently asked questions
Why are Voronoi cells used for procedural maps?
Relaxed Voronoi cells are irregular enough to look natural but even enough to behave like a grid. Each cell knows its neighbors, so elevation, rivers, regions and pathfinding can all work on the same polygon graph. The approach was popularized by Amit Patel's polygon map generation articles.
How are the kingdoms drawn?
Capitals are spread out over the land, then each kingdom grows outward cell by cell until it meets another. Islands that no capital can reach stay unclaimed.
Can I recreate the same map later?
Yes. A map is fully defined by its seed and settings. Write down the seed, or leave the page open — your settings are remembered in this browser.
Can I use the maps in my game or book?
The maps you generate are yours to use. The generator itself only draws in your browser; nothing is stored on our server.
